Heartland Institute Scandal and the Importance of Company Transparency

Leaked documents revealed that Heartland Institute, a US climate-skeptic think-tank, hopes to raise almost $4.5 million in corporate donations during 2012, says BusinessGreen. The documents indicate that large corporations such as Microsoft, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Diageo provided money to the controversial group.

While companies are more than entitled to spend promotional budgets however they like, they should be open about where money is flowing so they can be held accountable by shareholders and other investors, Bob Ward, policy director at Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at LSE, told BusinessGreen.

"For [companies] founded on science and engineering, it's difficult to see how they could support an organisation that is so ideological rather than scientific," he added. "The question for any company is: is that really the type of group you want to be associated with?"

The documents suggest Microsoft paid $59,908 to Heartland in 2011, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) paid $20,000 in 2011 and $30,000 the year before, Pfizer provided $130,000 in 2010, and Diageo gave $10,000 in 2010 and is expected to shell out another $10,000 in 2012, BusinessGreen also reports.

The NFL Environmental Program Is Making Solid Plays Post-Super Bowl

In case you’ve been wondering what happened to all of the post-Super Bowl waste in Indianapolis, the director of the NFL Environmental Program Jack Groh has good news.

To “green” the big game, the NFL’s goal was to use less supplies and recover everything that’s practical, Groh says in an article on indystar.com.

For example, the five to six miles of banners displayed in Indianapolis will be used to create bags and possibly shower curtains, according to the People for Urban Progress. Second Helpings, a local nonprofit community kitchen, collected over 40,000 pounds of leftover food related to Super Bowl events.

Four cases of gently used office supplies are being donated to Indianapolis Public Schools. Because of the fair weather weekend in Indianapolis, a large amount of unused winter clothing that the NFL ordered for employees will be donated, such as fleece-lined parkas, sweater vests and long-sleeved shirts.

By supplying 15,000 megawatt-hours worth of renewable energy certificates, Green Mountain Energy replaced carbon sources of energy used at the big game with energy from the wind.

Green Mountain Energy also has plans to buy carbon offsets to counter the effects of carbon energy created by the Giants’ and the Patriots’ travels to and from the game, according to the indystar.com article.

What’s the Environmental Impact of the Single-Cup Coffee Maker?

LEED Retrofits Surpasses New Construction

Although important to ensure newly constructed buildings are built green, there's currently more than 60 billion square feet of existing commercial buildings in the U.S. that could be made over. Greening existing buildings creates jobs, and helps businesses to save money, provide healthier environments for their employees and reduce their carbon footprint.

New data shows that in 2011, buildings retrofitted to be LEED certified exceeded buildings newly constructed to be LEED certified by 15 million square feet, according to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

An acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED was developed by USGBC in March 2000 and is an internationally recognized rating system.

LEED certified buildings are reconstructed, or built to be energy and water efficient, greatly decreasing the building's cost of operation. To let our readers know what EcoGreenOffice partners are doing to become and stay eco-friendly, we’ll be spotlighting a partner’s business and green initiatives every week.

This week we’re spotlighting the Colorado Convention Center.

The Colorado Convention Center, based in Denver, Colo., is well known as one of the most practical and “user-friendly” meeting facilities, and hosts more than 400 events annually.

The Convention Center is committed to four core values: Mindfulness, Integrity, Transparency and Accountability. Achieving these core values means being a leader in sustainability.

“Every year we try to build upon what we are doing and make it a little but more robust,” says Lindsay Arell, the sustainability programs manager for the Convention Center.

Reducing waste, as well as energy and water usage are included in the Convention’s Centers sustainability plan. Improving air quality and community relations are also included.

Highlights of their sustainability initiatives include a 300kw rooftop Solar Array, and replacing grass near the facility with native and drought resistant plants. All convention center employees are provided with a free ECO-pass to encourage use of the light rail and bus transportation.

Additionally, single stream recycling can be found throughout the facility. The Convention Center also has a back of the house compost collection program, and an advanced donation program for leftover conference materials. Local nonprofits and organizations are contacted about these leftover materials. Almost 30,000 pounds of material were donated the first year the program began. These initiatives helped the Convention Center achieve a 48 percent diversion rate for the facility in 2010.

Recent EcoGreenOffice research found the benefits of supporting locally owned, small business in the community.

The Convention Center also has an environmental purchasing policy. Groups efforts have also helped the Convention Center to earn the certification of LEED:EBOM (Existing Building Operation and Maintenance).

“It’s been exciting to work with the Convention Center to help implement these programs and see our employees get more engaged and see how it has tricked into their everyday life,” Arell says.

Although initially more expensive than regular bulbs, they use between 60% and 80% less energy and last much longer (between 6,000 and 15,000 hours compared with about 1,000 hours with incandescents).

Eco-friendly business is turning into big business and the companies who play well with others at this early stage in the game will come out as the industry leaders: focused, stronger and better positioned than their counterparts who try to go it alone.

"The more you include others, the more smoothly things flow and the more easily things come to you. In order to attract success, you need to welcome it wherever you see it" - Eckhart Tolle, "A New Earth".

The same thing goes for networking with other green businesses. Collaboration; peer and competitor support and esteem; and future returns on current relationship-building all are essential to maintaining your company's green presence, success and goals.

According to Freedonia Group, Inc., as of January 2011, "US green packaging demand [is projected] to top $42 billion in 2014 [and] US demand for recycled content, reusable and biodegradable packaging is projected to exceed $42 billion in 2014."

Those are big numbers, suitable to one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. According to a survey in the office supply industry of 2,500 business professionals, half were interested in greening their office's practices; but price points, and an understanding of what green choices are available and how to
implement them, are stumbling blocks.

Taking into account the billion-dollar potential of just the green packaging industry, and the fact that half of the surveyed office professionals were interested in eco-office measures, but didn't have the tools to affect change within their companies; green businesses need to assert their presence, build strong relationships and become the resource for those looking for answers.

General outreach practices including industry-specific tradeshows and directly contacting a peer or competitor are both excellent ways to grow your businesses network and create industry standards and resources. They provide a face-to-face or voice-to-voice experience that is still necessary in this age of technology, and can generate new ideas, jump-start an initiative, or simply lay groundwork for a future relationship. Tradeshows in particular are wellsprings of innovation and collaboration. Attending a green and sustainable tradeshow often increases enthusiasm and propels your green commitment to the next level. Introductions made at tradeshows can result in instantaneous recognition of like-minded goals and can start a partnership or idea-sharing and growth-promotion between two companies. The technological methods of networking, while not always as instantaneously supportive as direct contact with a like-minded company or person, play a significant role in business relationships today. Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn can be exceptionally beneficial in growing your businesses network; for innovation of new ideas and products; and for receiving necessary feedback and support needed to stay in tune with your original green commitment.

Twitter, while often seen as a flighty site for the pop culture generation, when used strategically as a marketing tool, wields great results within a niche market such as green. Facebook can not only provide a portal and voice to a company, it can be used as a platform for client interaction and can drive interest and revenue to new heights, as in the case of Sprinkles, a cupcake company, who's owner, through perseverance and clever marketing uses his Facebook page to engage his customers in a daily free cupcake game. Facebook utilization such as this gained Sprinkles 70,000 followers as early as 2009.

While Twitter and Facebook are the social darlings of social media, LinkedIn is the professional player, but don't discount it - or the others - for that reason. CO2 is the New "Perk" in Dry Cleaning

Perchloroethylene (perk) is the solvent found in 85% of the countries dry cleaners. But you won't find it at Revolution Cleaners. The reason- "Perk" is a proven ground and air contaminant. A huge focal point in the City of Denver is the 2.2 million square foot Colorado Convention Center. Host to countless events and hundreds of thousands visitors every year, the Colorado Convention Center is setting the standard on how to green a massive facility. Conferences today are not only capable of bringing together people and ideas, but can also work to increase collective social responsibility.

By remaining mindful of the impacts on the environment and community, events can be produced without leaving a negative footprint. The Meet Green program at the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) focuses on building operation, education and resources, and the industry as a whole.
